Five trends in sustainable agribusiness to watch in 2024

Agribusiness is a vital industry that hasn’t been known for its sustainable practices. But over the last few decades, this has slowly changed, from discontinuing some harmful pesticides to allowing fields to remain fallow for a season. Even the types of crops are changing as growers switch to native plants.

While these are positive changes, agribusiness still has a ways to go to reach its sustainability and environmental goals. For those of us in the nursery industry, there are numerous ways we can get involved. Based on my experience, here are five trends in the agricultural industries that I believe will shape 2024 agribusiness in surprising and innovative ways.

1. Sustainable Practices

Agricolleges are changing their curriculums, which will impact future generations of farmers. An emphasis is being placed on organic farming and preserving the area’s biodiversity. Many of these programs aim to educate growers and nurture environmentally friendly practices while making farming affordable and sustainable.

The nursery industry can also help make some of these practices more readily available. Products like organic fertilizers are hitting nursery floors. The types of seeds and plants are also changing. Instead of offering a range of non-native crop plants and seeds, consider looking at what grows naturally in the area. Native plants are less environmentally harmful, preventing erosion and leaving resources in the ground for other species to thrive.
