Far-red solutions and plant physiology insights

Far-red solutions and plant physiology insights

Dr. Alexey Shapiguzov, a Senior Scientist at LUKE, will discuss the investigation of plant physiology limits to horticultural lighting. LUKE has pioneered techniques for vertically growing cucumbers indoors and is now delving into how photosynthesis responds to light within leaves. Using examples from cucumber and tomatoes, Dr. Shapiguzov will illustrate the internal processes of plants through chlorophyll fluorescence. These insights into plant physiology have significant implications for controlled environmental agriculture (CEA) practices.

Dr. Craig Brelsford, Head of Plant R&D at Valoya and Greenlux Lighting Solutions, will explore the role of far-red light in vertical farming. He emphasized the importance of optimizing costs, particularly energy usage, for success in vertical farming ventures. Dr. Brelsford presented evidence that incorporating far-red light into the lighting recipe can enhance yield per kilowatt-hour (kWh) of energy consumed. This means achieving higher plant yields and profits relative to energy expenditure, offering a promising avenue for increasing efficiency and profitability in vertical farming operations.
