Vertical farming key to Brussels capital region strategy

Vertical farming key to Brussels capital region strategy

Many of the world's leading vertical farming businesses will gather in Brussels next week to hear how vertical farming will form a key part of the Brussels Capital Region's strategy for economic transition.

They will be addressed during the 2022 Vertical Farming World Congress by Barbara Trachte, Secretary of State for the Brussels Capital Region.  She will explain the Regional Strategy for Economic Transition and how this strategy can support the development of vertical farming activity in Brussels and beyond.

When she launched the Regional Strategy for Economic Transition entitled 'Shifting Economy', she commented: "Vertical farming is at the crossroads of multiple sectors and dependent on a wide range of competences, which are often split between different Ministers.  Vertical farming therefore needs a comprehensive approach from the public authorities."

She will outline the strategic role envisaged for vertical farming and link it to the vision developed by the region for the former Abattoirs.  She will present her vision at the Brussels Abattoir, where Congress delegates will also visit three urban agriculture operators:

ˇ       BIGH, aquaponics greenhouse - fish, herbs, vegetables

ˇ       ECLO, underground vertical farm - microgreens, mushrooms

ˇ       Urban Harvest, vertical farm - strawberries.

The 2022 Vertical Farming World Congress takes place from 19 to 21 September in the centre of Brussels.  Organised by specialist consultants Zenith Global in association with FarmTech Society, it is sponsored by platinum sponsor Intelligent Growth Solutions (IGS), gold sponsors JBT Proseal and Signify, silver sponsor Multivac and bronze sponsors Foundation for Food & Agriculture Research and Turatti.
