First Japanese company to sign VF Manifesto

In a groundbreaking move for the vertical farming industry, Spread Co., Ltd., a leader in the field based in Kyoto, Japan, has become the first Japanese company to sign the Vertical Farming Manifesto and Identity Statement. The company’s CEO, Shinji Inada, confirmed that they joined over 30 leading global vertical farming corporations in supporting these pioneering initiatives aimed at developing a sustainable global food system.

Initially conceived and signed by more than 20 of the world’s foremost vertical farming enterprises in Brussels, Belgium, in September 2022, the Vertical Farming Manifesto and Identity Statement serve as a blueprint for reforming the existing food systems. These documents underscore the urgency to address pressing societal and environmental concerns, including climate change, population growth, and economic disparity. They illustrate how vertical farming could contribute significantly to resolving these critical issues, all while seeking collaboration with traditional agriculture to amplify production volume and secure a sustainable food supply for the growing global populace.

This encompasses decarbonization, a transition to green energy, measuring environmental impact, ensuring transparency, and aligning with globally accepted frameworks, such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Spread Co., Ltd., established in 2006 with a vision of creating a “sustainable society where future generations can attain peace of mind,” reaffirmed its support for these global values despite the vertical farming industry’s current struggles with escalating energy and material costs. The company remains optimistic, asserting that vertical farming can surmount short-term difficulties through enhanced productivity.
