MONSON---A citizens petition article that would have allowed marijuana cultivation inside greenhouses on farms with at least 50 acres of land was rejected at a special Monson Town Meeting.

Because zoning amendments require a two-thirds majority to be enacted, the measure, which received 60 percent of the vote, was defeated on Monday night.

The zoning amendment was supported by 143 registered Monson voters, and opposed by 95 others during a secret ballot, according to official results tabulated by the Monson town clerk.
