Team Leader Bioinformatics, NL

Are you looking for a managerial role within a rapidly changing discipline? And are you keen to work with other disciplines within biotechnological plant research to achieve practical results? If so, apply for Team Leader Bioinformatics in Fijnaart.

A typical working day for the Team Leader Bioinformatics at Rijk Zwaan

In the Biotech lab at Rijk Zwaan in Fijnaart, we conduct research to identify significant genes as the basis for interesting new plant traits that add value to our vegetable varieties. Often, we also want to understand the underlying biological mechanism of such a value-adding trait. We work with high-quality genome sequencing and advanced bioinformatics techniques. The research is primarily multidisciplinary; DNA and RNA knowledge about our crops from a bioinformatics, quantitative genetics and molecular biology perspective is combined with knowledge of plant traits based on biochemistry, physiology, phytopathology or plant sciences.

The bioinformatics team comprises 11 researchers and technicians who work autonomously on a large number of projects and also collaborate in varying team setups.

As a Team Leader you draw up departmental plans and translate Rijk Zwaan’s strategy and the Research Masterplan into tactical and operational team goals. You help your team to creatively translate fundamental knowledge that is obtained in both their own and external research into practical solutions for our crops. You set priorities, make choices and safeguard the quality of the team’s work.

You motivate your team and ensure that the bioinformatics team is firmly embedded Rijk Zwaan’s research group as a whole so that optimal use can be made of the team’s expertise and know-how. You determine new strategies and techniques that are necessary to process, analyse and explore research data. In many cases this involves data generated by next-generation sequencing platforms. Bioinformatics is a rapidly changing discipline and the demand for advanced bioinformatics solutions within Rijk Zwaan is growing exponentially.

Do you have what it takes to work in an industrial environment with the highest academic standards and rise to this challenge together with your team? You will be a member of various project teams, often as the project manager, and you will be responsible for the communication with many other collaborative partners both within and outside of Rijk Zwaan.

Your contribution...

We are seeking a driven, resolute and results-oriented team manager. You take initiatives, are not afraid of making decisions and you are a good coach with excellent communication skills. You have thorough and up-to-date knowledge of bioinformatics. Thanks to your outstanding people skills, you are able to manage your team effectively. You have a long-term focus, you get excited by future possibilities and you enjoy working on the development, testing, usage and implementation of new techniques together with our own research departments and external research partners. Innovation is in your DNA.

In addition, your CV ticks the following boxes:

·       At least a PhD and postdoctoral research experience related to bioinformatics

·       Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a managerial role

·       Affinity with plant breeding is an advantage

·       Interest in the complexity of biological processes

What can you expect from us?

Besides an R&D department housing over 100 motivated colleagues within an international work environment with a steady stream of new challenges, we are pleased to offer you:

·       A permanent contract from the start

·       Various training courses and opportunities through our own Rijk Zwaan Academy

·       A high-tech, big-data environment

·       The freedom to take the initiative and work on your own development
