The vacancy for a R&D Farm Manager

Rijk Zwaan has been active in the Japanese vegetable industry for around 25 years, in partnership with the Japanese seed company Takada and other Japanese breeding and commercial partners. Rijk Zwaan plans to establish a breeding trial station in Japan so that it can improve the adaptation of its varieties for Japanese growing conditions and market requirements. Commercial activities will continue with RZ’s long established commercial partners.

Within this role you are responsible for the set-up, organisation and functioning of the RZ Japan breeding trial station. You connect with contractors, builders and suppliers to make sure the station is established. You take care of the co-ordination and planning of breeding trials. You are in close contact with the Japanese commercial partners and RZ breeding departments and breeding stations elsewhere in the world, where relevant breeding projects are carried out. You will take care that the breeding trials are commercially relevant and results are well communicated with the Japanese commercial partners. This requires an understanding of the Japanese vegetable seed market and close interactions with the commercial and product development teams of Takada and other commercial partners.

Within this role, you are responsible for coordinating with various RZ international research-breeding teams to plant, grow and evaluate variety trials and ensure timely reporting. The R&D farm supports various commercial activities by organizing demonstration trials on the farm. You will lead the workers to perform various farm activities and work closely with external trial partners. You are responsible for managing the budget and for planning future staffing and investment.

We are seeking a R&D Farm Manager with:

·       At least 3 years relevant experience in soil and/or soil-less cultivation

·       Team leading ability

·       Good knowledge of vegetable crop management, pest control and fertilization strategy

Furthermore you are committed to provide high service level, and to hold up the ethics of the company. You have strong analytical skills and you are pro-active in making suggestions for crop and trial improvement. You are a team player, able to take initiatives.
